Avoid Heartbreak from a Late Frost!
There’s nothing worse than nurturing your garden with care—only to lose tender plants to one sneaky cold snap. At Crystal Lake Garden Shop, we grow our own plants and know just how tempting it is to get a jumpstart on the season. But trust us—timing is everything.
Here’s your region-by-region guide to planting safely, plus our best tips to protect your garden if temperatures take a dip.
🌱 What Are Frost Dates & Why Do They Matter?
Your last spring frost date is the average date of the last light freeze in your area. After this date, it’s generally safe to plant heat-loving annuals, vegetables, and tender perennials. Plant too early, and even one cold night can set your garden back—or worse, wipe it out.
At Crystal Lake, located in Plymouth and Carver, MA, our typical last frost date falls between April 25 and May 10, depending on the year. But Mother Nature doesn’t always follow the calendar…

🛡️ Caught Off Guard? How to Protect Tender Plants
If you’ve already planted and a frost warning pops up, don’t panic. Here are some quick tricks:
-
Cover Up: Use bed sheets, row covers, or even upside-down buckets to trap warmth overnight. Be sure to remove them in the morning!
-
Water Ahead of Time: Moist soil retains heat better than dry soil.
-
Use Cloches: Plastic domes or even cut-off milk jugs work wonders.
-
Group Containers Together: Clustered pots retain more heat, especially when placed near a warm wall.
